STAR TAP

The Center has initiated several international advanced networking projects through its partnership with the NSF Science, Technology And Research Transit Access Point (STAR TAP) project, which is centered at University of Illinois at Chicago, and which is supported by MREN. The STAR TAP initiative is another major program that underscores Chicago's role as an emerging national center for advanced networking. Tom DeFanti, Director of the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) and co-inventor of the CAVE VR technology with EVL co-director Dan Sandin, is the PI of STAR TAP. STAR TAP developed from a GII program sponsored by the G7 group of nations. The National Science Foundation was asked to ensure, through this program, that national research activities are able to interact with international efforts in advanced networking. STAR TAP provides for interconnectivity among international high performance research networks linking Canada, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and in the future, Latin America. http://www.startap.net
