vBNS The National Science Foundation has established a national high-performance backbone network to support research by creating the very high-speed Backbone Network Service (vBNS). MREN provides advanced network connections to vBNS (currently OC-3c) soon via an OC-12 link) through switching services among the members connected to that switch with OC-3c links. Northwestern University, like most other MREN universities, has received a two-year NSF grant to connect to the vBNS (Northwestern received $485,000). In 1997, Northwestern University hosted a national NSF/MREN workshop on the vBNS and High-Performance Digital Communications. Approximately eighty Research I universities have received funds to connect to the vBNS. http://www.vbns.net
