(312) 996-3002The iGRID 2000 Event at July INET Conference Showcases 23 High-Speed Global Network Application Demonstrations
CHICAGO, IL -- The International Grid (iGrid) special event at this summer’s INET 2000 Conference in Yokohama, Japan, July 18-21, will showcase the latest in technological innovations and application advancements supporting global community networking (http://www.isoc.org/inet2000).
iGRID 2000 will highlight how scientific collaborators are now taking advantage of global connectivity to empower collaborative solutions to complex problems. Through advanced networking techniques, researchers can access distributed computing, remote storage and visualization/virtual-reality display devices more efficiently than ever.
The iGrid booth, jointly sponsored by the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology at Indiana University (IU), University of Tokyo and Keio University, will provide global connectivity to collaborators from Canada, Germany, Greece, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, USA and the CERN institute.
iGrid 2000 is composed of 23 application demonstrations requiring high-speed networks, with emphasis on distributed computing, tele-immersion, large datasets, remote instrumentation, collaboration, cultural heritage, digital video, streaming media and high-definition television. They are listed below.
The iGrid 2000 booth will have Silicon Graphics (SGI) Unix workstations and Windows/NT/Linux PCs. A centerpiece of the booth will be the CAVE(R) virtual-reality theater. Two ImmersaDesks(R) and plasma displays will also be used to showcase applications in virtual-reality (stereoscopic) or large-screen (monoscopic) mode. Another highlight of the booth will be NTT Network Innovation Laboratory’s digital movie system, in which super-high-definition movies will be transmitted over the network to the Convention Center. The booth will be connected to the Japanese Gigabit Network (JGN), the APAN network (http://www.apan.net) and the APAN/TransPAC (100Mbps) link (http://www.transpac.org) to STAR TAP (http://www.startap.net). The Science, Technology and Research Transit Access Point (STAR TAP) is the National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored international, interconnection point managed by EVL and operated by Ameritech Advanced Data Services in Chicago, Illinois.
EVL and IU, members of NCSA’s National Computational Science Alliance partnership, are working to advance the development of the International Technology Grid. The Grid is a prototype 21st century computational and information infrastructure, integrating high-performance computers, visualization environments, remote instruments, and massive databases via high-speed networks to support advanced applications.
